Recently we lost one of the longest founding members of our Nottingham St Patrick’s Day committee, Elaine Marren. Elaine, along with others, were the original members of the committee who decided to bring the Irish Celebration of St Patrick’s Day to Nottingham – and her passion and hard work kept this tradition alive for the future years to enjoy. May she rest in peace.
Elaine’s tribute page and Funeral Notice can be found here.
A Tribute from our former chairman, Tom Flynn
I have known Elaine for years, from serving several glasses of red wine to sitting in several meetings organising the St Patricks Day Parade. Elaine was one of these people that you would expect to be around forever and the thought of you gone and not to be around for next year’s parade makes it all that harder.
I got to know Elaine more through getting involved with The St Patricks Day parade. It was hard work for everyone, but we still managed to have a laugh.
Elaine was so committed to making every year a success for The Parade and for those who have never been involved you will never know how much work is involved. Elaine worked tirelessly and I mean tirelessly, from a very early start on the morning of every March 17th to the de brief meeting after and then organising the following years Parade, Elaine never stopped giving of herself. In my eyes, Elaine has legendary status within the Irish Community in Nottingham and beyond, not only for St Patrick’s day but also her work for Comhaltas and the Rose of Tralee. Through St Patrick’s Day Parade, Elaine provided an identity and a recognition for the Irish Community in Nottingham.
Elaine’s family should be so proud of her.
On Tuesday I went to St Patrick’s in New York for Mass at 7am. Please note Elaine I only did this for you. I said a prayer that you got to heaven safe and sound and you are now joining what I can only describe as the Elite and only imagine the craic you are having right now.
Words to describe you Elaine – beautiful inside and out, hard working, loyal, witty, proud, passionate, loved your family very much, and yellow tail shiraz.
Leaving me to say Elaine, fly high. You will be missed.
Tom
